THE GET DOWN
this week, we’re taking the dance offline + into the streets
our virtual dances are paused as we turn all of our attention to the #blacklivesmatter movement.
It doesn't matter if you think you can dance.
It doesn't matter what you wear,
what you look like or who your friends are.
& GROOVE HARDER THAN YOU HAVE IN YEARS — welcome to the family.
OUR VALUES
WE CREATE DANCE FLOORS THAT LIBERATE, HEAL AND UNITE THROUGH THE POWER OF MUSIC + COMMUNITY.
WE BELIEVE
Dance is a fundamental humxn right. We believe the best parties open our hearts, unleash our creative superpowers and remind us anything is possible — and that it all starts with grooving freely to mind-blowing beats in an atmosphere that feels like home.
WE VALUE
INCLUSIVITY
We welcome all identities, backgrounds, and walks of life (over 21!). We do our best to book accessible venues and provide support for all bodies to move with us. If you have any questions about accessibility, please send us an email!
RADICAL SELF EXPRESSION
You do you boo! Feel free to sweat, holler, rattle and roll! As long as you’re respecting the other bodies around you, your wildest expression is WELCOME.
PRESENCE
We spend enough time distracted by our screens, hiding behind our habits and lost in thoughts. This is where our first 2 rules come in. No drinks on the dance floor + no phones anywhere is your opportunity to be here now.
Many folks appreciate having photos and footage from the night — and many others prefer a completely camera-free dance floor. So we bring in a professional photographer to cover about 50% of our parties, and announce which nights will be totally photo-free.
RESPECT
We respect each other’s space and modes of expression. We recognize that other folks probably have different boundaries, needs and desires than we do ~ and we’re committed to respecting others’ personal vibes.
We also stay aware of our personal boundaries and take responsibility for owning them, and are mindful of the people around us so we don’t accidentally punch someone in the face when the bass drops.
SEX POSITIVITY
Sexiness is what happens when us humans feel safe enough to breathe, move, and feel our bodies freely.
It does not mean that I (person on the dance floor feeling awesome and sexy) want to interact sexually with you (person dancing next to me).
Want to dance with me? First, you gotta get …
F*CK YES CONSENT
We are committed to creating an environment where it’s totally normal and awesome for folks to check in with each other before making physical contact and/or stepping up levels of physical contact.
Please check for enthusiastic consent before moving into someone’s personal space. This can mean mirroring someone’s dance moves while far away, again before dancing with super close contact, and again (!) before using your hands to move in closer (you get the point).
A simple verbal check-in is a great way to make someone feel respected, safe & special! Try asking a question they can say F*CK YES to, like “Can I dance with you?” or “Can I put my hands on your hips?”
If you get a NO, thank your new friend for being true to themselves.
They’ll appreciate you for it!
DRESS TO SWEAT
Wear what makes you happy – including dance-friendly footwear that’ll last you for a few hours of serious grooves.
NEED SUPPORT?
Our Ground Force team is here for you! There are at least 4 team members sporting pink LED armbands around the dance floor (you can usually find one in or near the DJ booth). Please don’t hesitate to let us know what’s up and ask for help!
THE GET DOWN IS ABOUT MUSIC, MOVEMENT, AND LOVE. IT’S A RAUCOUS DANCE PARTY, AN INCLUSIVE COMMUNITY, AND A REVOLUTIONARY WAY OF LIFE.
We often host themed parties with a wide variety of themes, including Halloween, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, 70s, Prohibition-era, and many, many more. Sometimes, we even host parties dedicated to games, such as this one!
